A team of firefighters will walk 39 miles around Guernsey today (Saturday 6 June) wearing their heavy kit.
Hundreds of people are taking on Guernsey’s iconic Saffery Rotary Walk today, (6 June).
The gruelling 39-mile route includes the whole of the south coast cliff path.
While most participants will tackle the challenge in light walking gear, a team of local firefighters are going a step further.
Matt, Craig and Russell have signed up to complete the entire trek in their full firefighting kit.
They will also take turns carrying a breathing apparatus set throughout the challenge.
They've been training inside the Fire & Rescue Service’s station tower during lunch breaks.
Matt says they'll need physical fitness and willpower to complete the distance.
“It definitely seemed like a good idea when we first discussed it, but that opinion may change over the course of the Walk. Training has already shown us what a challenge it is going to be.
“The support and reactions we’ve had so far have been brilliant. We wanted to do something different while supporting such an important community event and the local charities involved.”
The team hope their efforts will encourage Islanders to donate £1,000 towards this year’s Saffery Rotary Walk chosen charities and local causes.
