Teachers Begin Two-Day Strike

Most schools across Jersey are closed today (17 October) because of a two-day walkout by teachers.

It is the third time this year strike action has kept children out of the classrooms.

Members of the National Education Union are striking in their long-running dispute, unhappy at their 7.9% pay offer and what they call 'years of pay erosion'.

They have refused the States Employment Board's request to go to independent arbitration to settle the row.

The employer says its offer is 'fair and reasonable'.

Teachers have already walked out twice this year, in July and September.

The last strike was supported by the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT).

NEU members are understood to have organised a walk along the St Helier seafront to Les Quennevais playing fields today.

During previous strikes, teachers have gathered in the Royal Square to protest while politicians have been in the States Chamber.

Of the States schools, Only Bel Royal, St Peter's and Trinity primaries are open, as well as La Sente.

Le Rocquier is open to year 11s, and Victoria College to years 11 and 13 this morning only.

Highlands College is open.
