All Government of Jersey schools will close on Friday (23 October) because of Storm Austen.
It is expected that a Channel Island Red Wind Warning will be issued in the early hours of Thursday (22 October), with the advice to avoid outdoor activity where possible, due to the forecast.
Based on this information, a decision has been made by the Minister for Education, Deputy Catherine Curtis, to close all Government of Jersey schools on Friday.
The government says schools will be communicating with parents, and that the decision has been made as early as possible to give families time to organise childcare arrangements.
Wind gusts will increase from Thursday evening and overnight to around 50 to 60mph, and by dawn, they'll increase to around 80mph.
There's likely to be disruption to travel, as well as potential damage to trees and infrastructure, and a risk of localised flooding.
