The fire service reminds islanders of how flammable Halloween costumes are, and other ways to take care during the season.
Jersey Fire and Rescue is urging islanders to follow essential fire safety guidelines this Halloween.
Halloween costumes are extremely flammable. They should be checked comply with toy safety standards, which regulate burn rates and require appropriate warnings to minimise risk.
The service is reminding islanders of these key points:
- Choose flame-resistant costumes that carry the CE mark
- Avoid naked flames by using battery-operated LED lights instead of candles
- If candles are used, keep them away from decorations and never leave them unattended
- Place tea lights on saucers - not just in their tin cups - as the cups get hot and can cause fires
They are urging parents to teach their children “Stop, Drop, and Roll” in the event of a fire.
Phil Falle, Fire Service Prevention Officer, says there are lots of open flames around during this season:
"The materials used in these outfits are much more likely to catch fire.
"When somebody is dressed up, if you combine that with a naked flame and excited children when people are putting candles around homes, there's that added risk."
