Grants To Be Given For Electric Vehicles

The government is offering grants of £3,500 towards the cost of electric cars and vans.

The money can be used on new or second-hand vehicles costing up to £40,000.

The funding is coming from the Climate Emergency Fund, with £4.5 million set aside specifically for electric vehicle support.

Islanders can also get £300 towards the cost of electric mopeds and motorbikes which cost less than £5,000.

Climate Change Minister, Deputy Hilary Jeune says that transport makes up 40% of Jersey's carbon emissions.

"I appreciate and understand that the purchase of a vehicle can be a significant financial cost, whether new or used. We see the highest uptake of electric vehicles in jurisdictions that make them cheaper to buy, which is why we’ve launched these incentives today to do just that.

The aim now is to get more electric vehicles into the Island. We know many Islanders are considering going electric with their next vehicle and this extra bit of financial support will hopefully help them make the switch."

Alongside the support to buy a new vehicle, the government is also giving grants of £350 towards the cost of installing an at-home EV charger.

The scheme joins a number of others launched by Ministers to get people to move away from petrol and diesel vehicles, including grants towards electric bikes, school streets and extra bus services.
