Government gives Bergerac grant update

Jersey's government still intends to provide funding to the makers of a reboot of the TV series Bergerac.

The grant will be given after production, on the condition Jersey's economy has benefited.

When asked by another politician where the undisclosed sum will come from, Economic Development Minister Deputy Kirsten Morel told the States Assembly it would come from his department's budget and the Visit Jersey budget.

The government hopes that if the Bergerac reboot is successful, a screen or film commission could be created in the island to deal with future projects.

Deputy Kirsten Morel says TV series created in the island will boost the economy.

"[It'll benefit] the visitor economy, but also providing careers for young people, alternative careers, which I think is absolutely vital."

The reboot of the iconic detective series has confirmed 'Doctor Who's' Toby Whithouse as one of the screenwriters alongside 'Trust's' Brian Fillis, 'Three Pine's' Catherine Tregenna and 'Love Rat's' Polly Buckle.

Filming is scheduled for the summer months. Reports in April said the cast would be announced 'in the coming weeks'.
