Police and support services are working together to raise awareness and help victims of domestic abuse during the World Cup.
Jersey Police has partnered with agencies that provide support to victims, as the 39-day tournament gets underway in the US, Canada and Mexico.
Studies in the UK show that existing domestic abuse can escalate during sporting tournaments - with research suggesting a rise in incidents of 38% when England lost a World Cup game, and of 26% percent even when they won.
Heightened emotions and alcohol have been found to intensify existing abusive behaviour.
The force works with Jersey Domestic Abuse Support to assess recent incidents and target their response and safeguarding actions.
The aim is to identify opportunities to manage risk, disrupt offending behaviour, and ensure victims receive timely access to specialist support.
SOJP says, throughout the World Cup tournament, it will be carrying out 'intelligence lead disruptions', increasing patrols and making licensing checks on pubs and bars.
Acting Chief Inspector Aiden Quenault said pubs staying open later will have an impact:
"Sporting events such as the World Cup are an opportunity for people to come together.
"However, for some individuals, this period can present an increased risk where the consumption of alcohol, the use of recreational drugs and heightened emotions can contribute towards increased incidents of abuse or violence.
"We also see patterns more generally during periods such as bank holidays or warm weather, when people tend to socialise more and alcohol consumption can increase.
"That’s why it’s important that support is visible and accessible, and that people know help is available.
"Domestic abuse in any of its forms is entirely unacceptable."
Sarah Hamon, Service Manager JDAS, has urged people to get help if they need it.
“We know that reaching out can be difficult, particularly at times when behaviour may escalate. Our message is simple – you are not alone, and support is available.”
