Solar panels - or an alternative - will be required on all new housing and commercial developments in Guernsey.
The Development and Planning Authority has made it mandatory for roof-top solar panels or an alternative renewable energy source to be included in future construction projects.
It follows agreement in the States in 2023, requesting Environment and Infrastructure and the DPA to find ways of increasing the installation of solar arrays.
Alternatives could include non-roof mounted panels, air source heat pumps and better storage.
DPA President Deputy Neil Inder said:
“Making solar panels mandatory on new developments is good for our environment and is good for our energy security, all in line with the States-approved Electricity Strategy.
“It’s good that some developers already do this as standard, but making it mandatory means that we’re making the most of the opportunities that new developments pose. It’s also cheaper to install these during the build rather than fitting them somewhere down the line.”
Environment & Infrastructure Committee President Adrian Gabriel welcomed the announcement and said it would 'undoubtedly help Guernsey in achieving its renewable energy targets'.
