Sure says not one single call has been made from a roadside phone box at all this year.
Guernsey has 22 phone boxes, but they are chronically underused.
For the first nine months of 2025 no one has made a call from any of them.
Sure has decided that they are unnecessary in the age of the smartphone and 5G, but is obliged to consult.
This is why a notice went up in phone boxes at the beginning of September, advising customers of the move. You can see this in the picture below, to the right of the keypad.
The consultation has a further month to run, and then Sure will discuss the move with Citizens Advice and Age Concern.
Simon Baldwin, Sure’s Chief Commercial Officer, says the 22 locations have been tested for connectivity:
“Sure’s team has carried out tests to confirm there is strong mobile signal at each of the affected sites.
There is no time frame for the removal of the phone boxes so we’ll devise a plan once all appropriate consultation has taken place.”
