There will be traffic jams and delays to daytime journeys for two weeks from Monday (13 January) as the road near the old Tram Sheds is down to one lane, to enable sea defence work to be carried out.
Les Banques is Guernsey's busiest road, linking the populous north of the island with St Peter Port, and at rush hour there are often long tail backs.
But the sea defences are essential and the picture below shows how the steel, coffer dam type material has eroded due to the effects of weathering and salt water.
Work to replace this cladding, which supports the concrete apron in front of the granite sea wall, is expected to take 15 days, from Monday 13.
Traffic and Highways is closing the sea-side pavement meaning that for safety reasons, one of Guernsey's key arterial routes will be down to one lane.
This is between the offices of Carey Olsen and Ian Brown's bike shop.
Manually operated traffic lights aim to reduce waiting times but drivers are being told to expect delays, factor in more time for their journey or divert inland.
Completion of the work on 28 January is dependent on tides.
